The Indian Premier League began with ‘icon players’ in 2008. The whole idea of this term was to select a star player and then structure a team around him. These icon players later on became the most loyal players and went on to represent the side for the next three years before the franchises decided to course-correct.
But some of the players, whom we are going to see in this article, were not ‘icon players’ per se but went on to play for the franchise for a very long time and they topped the charts of IPL betting.
Names like Shane Warne, Kieron Pollard, and Virat Kohli ensured that they stayed with their respective franchises with Sachin Tendulkar being the only ‘icon player’ in our list.
Five Legends Who Never Moved to Other IPL Teams
Our list begins with RCB’s Virat Kohli, who still plays for the same side as of writing this report. Then, we will move on to Shane Warne of Rajasthan Royals. And the last three belong to Mumbai Indians: Kieron Pollard, Lasith Malinga, and Sachin Tendulkar. All these players forged unbreakable bonds with their respective franchises, and we will now figure out why.
Virat Kohli (Royal Challengers Bangalore): A bond that is still going strong, Kohli arrived at CSK in the inaugural season in 2008.
- He was bought for an initial price of INR 12 lakh.
- Despite some lows, RCB management backed him and rightly identified him as the one for the future.
- As he started scoring runs in the subsequent seasons, their investment proved right.
- He repaid the faith shown in him by scoring 557 runs in the 2011 season—his highest ever tally in IPL history.
- He went on to become the captain for a full season in 2013 and never looked back.
- He scored 973 runs in the 2016 season, leading his team to the finals.
- As he became a legend on an international level, his RCB bond became even more stronger.
- As of now, this bond is more than 16 years old with Kohli set to return in 2024.
Shane Warne (Rajasthan Royals): Warne too became a legend at the Rajasthan Royals when he helped them to their maiden IPL title in 2008.
- Unlike some of the other bigwigs, RR were the underdogs in the inaugural season.
- But it was the brilliant tactics used by Warne that made them win the title against all odds.
- He also groomed talented Indian youngsters like Yusuf Pathan and Ravindra Jadeja.
- He peacefully retired from the IPL after the 2011 season, choosing not to move to another franchise.
Kieron Pollard (Mumbai Indians): Interestingly, Pollard found no takers in the 2009 IPL auctions. But by 2010, Mumbai Indians had understood his value:
- As a result, Pollard was bought for INR 4.8 crore, making him the joint-most expensive overseas player in 2010 alongside Shane Bond.
- He was retained for the 2011 mega auction as he played a key role in team reaching the final in 2010.
- By the time the 2014 mega auctions came, Pollard had become a match winner who could not only bat big, but also bowl and field well.
- He was retained every year by Mumbai Indians, along with the other members who went on to become the core of the side.
- He finally called time on his IPL career in 2022, ending his IPL saga featuring just one franchise.
Lasith Malinga (Mumbai Indians): Malinga made his IPL debut in 2009, and by the time mega auctions came, he had already sealed his place in the Mumbai side.
- In 2009 and 2010, he alone accounted for 33 wickets.
- In 2011, he was the Purple Cap holder with 28 wickets in a single season.
- He also became the fastest bowler to reach 100 IPL wickets.
- He was unorthodox and ruthless, and his yorkers were unpredictable.
- No surprises, Mumbai Indians never allowed him to leave.
- He called time on his IPL career in 2021 and will return to the franchise as a bowling coach for the 2024 season.
Sachin Tendulkar (Mumbai Indians): Last but not least, the Master Blaster was another player who was backed by the Mumbai Indians:
- Tendulkar called time on his IPL career in 2013, but he was retained till then every year by the Mumbai Indians.
- After not-so-good starts under his captaincy in the first two years, as other franchises removed big names from the position, Mumbai backed Tendulkar.
- He repaid the faith with run tallies of 618 and 553 runs in 2010 and 2011, respectively. This also included a runner-up finish in IPL 2010.
- He, along with Malinga, Pollard, and Rohit Sharma, became part of the core group that was retained on a regular basis.
- When Tendulkar retired in 2013, he had played for just one team during his five-year IPL stay.
Final Thoughts:
A select few have managed to play for one team in the entire IPL history. It’s unfortunate that someone like MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, and Rohit Sharma don’t feature in this list.
While the CSK duo had to abandon their franchise in 2015 as it was banned in the wake of spot-fixing scandal, Rohit’s IPL career started at the Deccan Chargers in 2008. He became a core member of Mumbai only when he moved there in 2011.
Coming back to the above-mentioned names, we can clearly see that three of the five players belong to the Mumbai Indians, which shows how the talent spotters knew very early who could be in their core group. The likes of Malinga, Pollard, and Tendulkar were all identified early and were never let go as they built a team around this core group.
Kohli and Warne had vastly different cases. While Kohli got lucky that RCB management didn’t dump him, and he eventually made the most of his chances to become a legend, Warne had already crossed the 40-mark and wanted to call time on his IPL career.
For whatever Warne did at RR, the management of the franchise was grateful and walked the talk by retaining him till he called for IPL retirement.
